Monsieur de Guerlain’s handkerchief, the scent of a dandy

Like many perfumes from the house of Guerlain, the Mouchoir de Monsieur is a nod to an essential accessory of history. It refers to a fashion from the beginning of the 20th century and symbolizes the smell of dandies. Nevertheless, despite its longevity, this one does not seem to have aged a bit. Monsieur’s handkerchief is a timeless fragrance and once again signs all the creative genius of the Guerlain brand.

A tradition brought up to date by Guerlain

At the start of the 20th century, perfume was already an inseparable element of elegance. Also, each man made sure to take with him a delicately scented handkerchief. Likewise, they did not hesitate to sprinkle perfume on the linings of their clothes or gloves. On the other hand, it was not yet worn on the skin. Also, Jacques Guerlain decided to make this tradition a very innovative essence. Le Mouchoir de Monsieur is therefore a tribute to a custom from the beginning of the 20th century. What is more, it is one of the oldest perfumes currently sold since it was created in 1904. Also, it did not fail to surprise when it was released. Indeed, at that time, men only wore Colognes. Le Mouchoir de Monsieur is in this sense considered to be the first male fragrance of modern perfumery.

Le Mouchoir de Monsieur, the first perfume

This composition by Jacques Guerlain is very complex. Indeed, to be faithful to the style of its time, this one displays a start similar to that of a Cologne. The Handkerchief of Monsieur is particularly dazzling . It combines bergamot with absinthe. Nevertheless, these two ingredients are softened by lavender and neroli. The sophisticated character of this perfume, meanwhile, is evident at its heart. The latter contains in particular jasmine and rose. Cinnamon, on the other hand, enhances the whole thing with a hint of spice while the whole evolves towards the powdery scent of iris. Finally, the base is enriched with patchouli, oak moss and amber. Vanilla and tonka bean, on the other hand, help to make the whole thing more enveloping and sensual.
